President of China Overseas Friendship Association Mr. Wang Zhaoguo on Taiwan Issue

On the evening of 25 January,2002, a seminar was held by the Consulate General for the visiting Vice-Chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC and President of China Overseas Friendship Association Mr. Wang Zhaoguo and more than 50 Chinese from mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong who are living in Auckland. On the occasion of the 7th anniversary of President Jiang Zemin's Speech on Taiwan Issue, Mr. Wang exchanged views on the situation across the Taiwan Strait with all the participants.

President Wang clarified the policy of Chinese government over Taiwan issue. He pointed out that the "8-point principles" stipulated in the Speech by President Jiang Zemin remains to be the guidelines in the settlement of the national reunification, stressing that the trend of national reunification would never be held and the fact that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China would never be changed. He said that the situation across the Taiwan Strait had been taken in a different shape since the Democratic Progressive Party, refusing to accept the "one-China Principle", "took power" in Taiwan. All the Chinese living overseas across the world have kept their close eyes on the situation on the Taiwan island and voluntarily set up various organizations to promote the national reunification. He expressed his confidence that the goal of reunification would surely be achieved with the strengthening of economic links and personnel exchanges on the two sides of the Strait, further development of the economy of the motherland as well as the sustained efforts of all the Chinese living at home and abroad.
President Wang also answered the questions raised by the attendees.
